The Fragmented Six by elmwynn5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() All were fragmented but their horns or antlers were relatively intact, and some were found near to traces of hearths. At the start of 2023 researchers announced that a Spanish archaeological site known as Cueva Des-Cubierta (a play on "uncover" and "discover") held an unusually large number of big-game skulls. ![]() This isn't the gory beginning of an ice age horror novel, but the setting for a fascinating Neanderthal mystery. Tiny fires were lit amidst a boulder-jumbled floor, and the flame-illuminated chamber echoed to dull pounding, cracking and squelching sounds as the skulls of bison, wild cattle, red deer and rhinoceros were smashed open. Sometime between 135,000-50,000 years ago, hands slick with animal blood carried more than 35 huge horned heads into a small, dark, winding cave. ![]()

![]() And so, with him leaving, you know, over the issues of the work that he was producing and how it was being perceived, a lot of people took it to be that he was just crazy.Īnd I think the reason that we saw it as that is that we're not accustomed to people being conflicted about the issue of artistic responsibility. ![]() Professor WILLIAM JELANI COBB (Author, "The Devil and Dave Chappelle: And Other Essays"): I think that Dave Chappelle's exit from his show really crystallized a lot of the questions that are, you know, surrounding black culture right now. He began by explaining the book's title essay. Cobb is a professor of history at Spelman College and spoke with NPR's Farai Chideya from the studios of WABE in Atlanta. His new book, "The Devil and Dave Chappelle," is a collection of essays that draws on contemporary entertainment, politics, and his own life to create a critical vision of black America. ![]() Remember back when Dave Chappelle split for Africa, ditching a $50 million TV contract? Or when Oprah went toe-to-toe over morals with some hip-hop heavyweights? William Jelani Cobb does. ![]()

Sink the Belgrano by Mike Rossiter5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() With all of the pace and tension of a thriller Mike Rossiter takes us inside the battle for the South Atlantic and shows us the human drama behind the famous Sun headline Gotcha!. Now Mike Rossiter with unprecedented access to servicemen on both sides of the fight sailors from the Belgrano and HMS Conqueror gives us a dramatic and definitive retelling of the events that foreshadowed and followed on from this flash point of modern war. For many it signalled Britain s entry into the war and has been seen as a politically motivated decision deliberately designed to take Britain irrevocably into the conflict. ![]() The sinking of the Belgrano was one of the most iconic moment of the Falklands war. ![]()

What Lies Between Us by Nayomi Munaweera5/23/2023 ![]() ![]() However, about halfway through the book I began to lose interest. The descriptions of her childhood in Sri Lanka, the reasons why she and and her mother left, growing up in California and going to school, etc. Eventually her past catches up to her and perhaps manifests itself in the worst possible way. There the narrator grows up, goes to college, gets married and has a family. Eventually her life there becomes unbearable due to a dark secret and she and her mother flee the awful memories (and unfortunate gossip) to flee to the US. ![]() The unnamed narrator opens the book in what appears to be some sort of prison cell and tells us about her life as a child in Sri Lanka. ![]() While I don't remember what it was that drew me to Munaweera's book, I found myself drawn into the mesmerizing text. Unfortunately the ghosts of her past continue to haunt her as she grows up and tries to move on with her life. Beautifully written book about a woman who suffers childhood trauma and moves to the US. ![]()

A psalm for the wild built reviews5/23/2023 ![]() ![]() This is a book that, for one night, made me stop asking ‘what am I even for?’ I’m prescribing a preorder to anyone who has ever felt lost. “Chambers’ writing is always tender and healing, but this book has something else braided into it - something more. “Hugo Award–winning author Becky Chambers begins a new series with this delightful and quietly philosophical novella that presents a hopeful glimpse into a future where humanity actually does the right thing.” - Buzzfeed With a pervading sense of optimism and warmth, A Psalm for the Wild-Built inaugurates an exciting series from one of science fiction's brightest stars.” - Shelf Awareness starred review “The gentle touch with which Chambers handles her material makes the book's loftiest philosophical aims feel grounded. “ A Psalm for the Wild-Built begins a series that looks optimistic and hopeful, pursuing stories that arise from abundance instead of scarcity, kindness instead of cruelty, and I look forward to seeing where it goes from here.” -NPR A Brooklyn Public Library Book Prize Finalist! ![]() |
