Frank miller 300 book5/20/2023 ![]() ![]() It’s comparisons to Sin City would be unwarranted, given lack of diversity of colour and the stark difference in setting. Written and illustrated by Frank Miller and painted by Lynn Varley, the artwork is dark, firm lines, washed out colours with a prominence of a dull yellow and the characteristic Spartan red which fits the warm and difficult summers of the warring Greece perfectly. While there is much to criticize in 300, what stands out most in this book are the double-paged spreads in striking artwork. 300, the graphic novel based on the Battle of Thermopylae (480 B.C.) in Greece, is a heroic tale of 300 Spartan soldiers making their last stand against the colossal Persian army. ![]() The creator of legendary titles like Batman: Year One, The Dark Knight Returns and Sin City, Frank Miller, in 1998 wrote a historically inspired graphic novel, which, while not in the same league as the aforementioned titles, is an indispensable part of his career as a writer and illustrator. ![]()

After taking what appears to be a routine case, Jessica finds herself coming face-to-face with several other versions of herself –including her former costumed personas Jewel and Huntress– leading to an even greater mystery involving the Multiverse. Civil disobedience 18495/19/2023 ![]() ![]() Cage, whose voice is manipulated by pitch and by speed, reads a mesostic (a poetic structure similar to an acrostic, with a vertical phrase formed by lines of horizontal text) that references Erik Satie’s Messes des Pauvres and ‘On the Duty of Civil Disobedience’ (1849) by American transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau. As well, six chairs, sourced locally, are repositioned in new locations each day. The installation consists of 36-channel sound recordings and twenty-four theatrical lights selected and programmed according to instructions generated by the Chinese classic I-Ching (Book of Changes). ![]() From what I gathered reading it, most if not all of these stories had been published before as part of different collections or anthologies. Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman is a collection of “short fiction and illusions,” originally published in 1998. It will dazzle your senses, touch your heart, and haunt your dreams. Explore a new reality, obscured by smoke and darkness yet brilliantly tangible, in this extraordinary collection of short works by a master prestidigitator. ![]() ![]() ![]() In Smoke and Mirrors, Gaiman’s imagination and supreme artistry transform a mundane world into a place of terrible wonders-where an old woman can purchase the Holy Grail at a thrift store, where assassins advertise their services in the Yellow Pages under “Pest Control,” and where a frightened young boy must barter for his life with a mean-spirited troll living beneath a bridge by the railroad tracks. In the deft hands of Neil Gaiman, magic is no mere illusion. ![]()

Prodigy by Marie Lu5/19/2023 ![]() As June is undressing Day, she thinks "I wonder what a naked boy would look like". Not even a third of the way through the book, June needs to attempt to cleanse Day's wounds in a bathroom - with a closed door - by undressing him (because his wound is severe enough that he can't undress himself) so that she can get to his leg wound. I was so impressed by the lack of language and the absence of sex/nudity in Legend, and I thought for sure that Prodigy (book two) would keep the same moral standards as a novel. Let's just start off by saying that I really, really loved book one of this series (Legend). ![]() ![]() ![]() This is a longer review, and you're welcome to go ahead and scroll down, but I believe that it is necessary to read this if you are considering whether or not your child should read this book. ![]()

Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi5/19/2023 ![]() ![]() The oath says that we will come back, that we will not stay in this world, that we are loyal to the other side. It is a promise we made when we were free and floating, before we entered the Ada. This compound object is called the iyi- ụ wa, the oath of the world. With a force like ours, we dragged other things along-a pact, bits of bone, an igneous rock, worn-out velveteen, a strip of human hide tying it all together. Think of brief insanities that are in you, not just the ones that blossomed as you grew into taller, more sinful versions of yourself, but the ones you were born with, tucked behind your liver. This is all, ultimately, a litany of madness-the colors of it, the sounds it makes in heavy nights, the chirping of it across the shoulder of the morning. Her writing has previously appeared in various literary magazines, including Granta. Akwaeke Emezi is the recipient of the 2017 Commonwealth Short Story Prize for Africa. When Ada leaves Nigeria for college, her moodiness becomes something else entirely: she develops separate selves. Ada's parents successfully prayed her into existence but she's a worrisome child prone to bouts of anger and grief. The following is from Akwaeke Emezi's debut novel, Freshwater. ![]()
